Following party rules ensures fun for everyone

Heading to a work party?

Nearly 70 percent of employers say they’ll have a holiday party this year, according to a CareerBuilder survey. But office parties can be dangerous to navigate for both employees and employers.

Here are 10 tips from Business Insider on how to enjoy the festivities without suffering any unfortunate negative job repercussions the next day:

  1. Make an effort to show up at the office holiday party. It shows your commitment to your job and company.
  2. Don’t be the first person to leave. It makes it look like you have better things to do and never wanted to be there in the first place.
  3. Dress appropriately.  Just because the party is after work hours, that doesn’t mean you should wear something that’s not work appropriate.
  4. Make sure your significant other knows what kind of attire is expected and if there are any topics they should avoid discussing.  Their behavior will reflect on you.
  5. Don’t be antisocial. Talk to people you don’t know and use the party as an opportunity to meet new people.
  6. Don’t get drunk. Set a limit for yourself before going to the party. Make sure you eat something to lessen the effects of alcohol.
  7. Keep your conversation positive. Don’t complain about your job or company. You never know who’s listening.
  8. Don’t talk about work. This is social time.
  9. Don’t make a fool of yourself. You don’t know who’s taking video or where it will wind up. Likewise, avoid posting negative comments and inappropriate photos of others to social media.
  10. And finally, make sure you say thank you to the host or party organizers.

Mishaps bring unwelcome visitors to salons

Working in a salon can be an adventure – you never know who might walk through the door. Or even crash through the window.

A successful salon is focused on style and service, but a safe environment for clients and employees is just as important.

A deer who likely was not looking for hair styling services stopped by a Sports Clips Haircuts in Springfield, Missouri last week without an appointment.

The animal smashed through the window of the hair salon, according to Fox News. The deer’s sudden appearance was caught on surveillance cameras, and the salon posted the video on its Facebook page  with the caption: “Our four-legged buddy in Missouri just couldn’t wait to treat himself to the MVP Experience — he crashed right through the front door!”

The deer left the premises when a man held the door open for it.

And in Jacksonville, Florida, several stylists barely escaped injury when a car came crashing into the salon. The elderly driver, who was arriving for a hair appointment, accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes and came through the front window, according to CBS 47.

The incident also damaged the cell phone business on the other side of the wall.

In general, hair salons are a safe place to work – when deer and elderly clients aren’t crashing through the windows. The staff at a quality salon will be trained to operate the salon in a safe manner. Sanitation and accident prevention will be taken into consideration, as well as evacuation procedures if there is an emergency.

Relaxers loosen tightly-coiled hair

If you have very tightly-coiled hair that you want to straighten, you may want to consider getting professional help with relaxing your natural curl.

Many people choose to relax their curly hair for easier maintenance and styling. It is important that it is done correctly by a hair care professional, to prevent damage to your hair and scalp.

According to, the chemical process can cause scalp irritation and hair breakage or hair loss if it is done incorrectly. Scalp burns can lead to infection or bald patches.

All relaxers contain chemicals and can cause damage, even those that are labeled “organic” or natural.

Relaxers work by breaking down protein bonds within the hair shaft. Lye relaxers contain sodium hydroxide, a caustic chemical. No-lye relaxers are milder, but can still cause damage to the hair and scalp if used incorrectly.

Relaxers come in super, regular and mild strengths; choosing which one to use depends on the tightness of the coils you are trying to relax. If you use a relaxer that is too strong or leave it on your hair too long, it can cause permanent damage, as can using a relaxer soon after you have had another chemical-based hair service, like color, or if you apply relaxer on already-relaxed hair.

Since your relaxed hair will be weaker and dry, it’s important to use regular conditioning treatments to help prevent breakage. Your hair care professional can guide you through the best suggested after-care procedures that will allow you to maintain your relaxed look and healthy hair at the same time.

To have your hair relaxation procedure performed properly, you should seek out a high-quality salon.
